The Royal Palace of Palermo Salt Duke of Montalto Independence Square, tourist entrance
24 April-June 10, 2014
The Palatine Chapel, the most beautiful church in the world, the most surprising religious jewel dreamed by human thought such as Guy de Maupassant, defined as a casket, in addition to the Golden mosaics, houses an important wealth of silver, ivory and precious fabrics. This exhibition presents, for the first time, the exhibition of the entire collection of liturgical furnishings and a selection of the finest vestments, valuing a treasure of applied arts little known and rarely used in its entirety.Admiring the seventy silver presented works made by silversmiths of Palermo between the end of the sixteenth century and the second half of the 19th century, you can clearly see the convergence of multiple items, linked both to the will of the customer that the sensitivity of the author and the subject matter that the context in which it was created. The approximately twenty textiles are the oldest and most interesting testimonies of the malicious fire survivors in the sacristy of the chapel on the afternoon of October 27, 1963. What remains of the collection of silk and embroidery of the Cappella Palatina in Palermo has a note-vole review of vintage and original vestments that, thanks to this exhibition, demonstration are enhanced allowing appropriate use entirely deserved and due. The works shown documenting a chronological arch that by the end of the 16th century came up in the early 1900s.Between silver and precious silks and shimmering, selected by Maria Concetta Di Natale and Mauritius Vitella, are also exhibited unusual coffins eburnei and scrolls. These works, relevant to the Treasury and to the tabulario of the Chapel, documenting the nearly thousand-year history of the Church of the Royal Palace and offer the ability to do memory of a great scholar, for years keeper of this significant and remarkable heritage: Mons. Benedict Rocco. The exhibition dedicated to him, offers an itinerary to discover exceptional Cape-little known works of art that testify to the extraordinary richness and decorum over time recognized the sacred liturgy in the Chapel Royal, jewel of Byzantine art in its heyday (Bernard Berenson).
